Privacy Policy
Privacy policy
This policy describes how we handle information when you use the website and related features operated for Meteorologist Jack Drake (the “Site”) and the optional paid SMS weather alert subscription (the “Service”). By using the Site or Service, you agree to this policy. Privacy requests: jack@ctweather.com.
What we collect
Visitors. We and our host may process technical data such as IP address,
browser type, request time, and pages or API paths accessed. We use IP addresses (from headers
like X-Forwarded-For or
X-Real-IP) to rate-limit our
APIs; counts sit in server memory briefly for abuse prevention. Some tools may receive
non-identifying preferences (for example time zone for charts). We do not use ad or analytics
pixels on our domain. Third-party content you load in the browser (maps, fonts, scripts,
government or academic weather data feeds) may process technical data under their own policies.
Commercial weather data used on the Site is generally fetched by our servers on your behalf; those requests are not tied to your name, email, or phone number.
Subscribers. If you sign up for SMS alerts, we collect what you submit (such as name, email, phone, location fields, and consent). Stripe processes payment; we do not store full card numbers on our servers. We may retain consent text, signup time, and subscription status for legal and operational needs.
Cookies and similar technologies
We do not use first-party marketing cookies. We store your light/dark theme in browser
local storage (theme). Stripe may use cookies or similar tools on its own domains during checkout.
Other third parties may use cookies or similar technologies when their resources load; see their
notices. We do not run a cookie banner today because we do not set non-essential marketing
cookies on our domain and we describe third-party behavior here; requirements can differ if you
are outside the United States or if we add tracking or change how third parties load.
How we use and share information
We use information to run and improve the Site and Service, deliver SMS you signed up for, process payments, maintain subscriber records, send operational email to the site operator when configured, enforce rate limits, secure our systems, and comply with law. We use vendors including Netlify (hosting), Supabase (subscriber data), Stripe (payments), and Resend (transactional email to the operator, which may include subscriber details needed for onboarding).
SMS delivery (Textedly). We use The Texting Company, LLC (d/b/a Textedly) to send and manage subscription text messages on our behalf. To deliver SMS, Textedly and underlying mobile carriers may process identifiers such as your phone number, message content, delivery status, and related technical metadata. Textedly processes such information under its own policies as a messaging service provider for its business customers. Textedly’s agreements with us govern its platform as vendor to us; they are not your direct contract with us for the Service.
We may disclose information if required by law, to protect rights and safety, or as part of a merger or similar transaction subject to safeguards.
We do not sell personal information as that term is commonly used in U.S. state privacy laws, and we do not use subscriber data for unrelated marketing without permission where required.
Retention and security
We keep subscriber and billing-related data as long as needed for the Service, legal and tax needs, disputes, and agreements. API rate-limit data is short-lived. We use reasonable safeguards; no method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure.
Your choices and rights
SMS: You may opt out of alert texts by replying with STOP, END, QUIT, CANCEL, UNSUBSCRIBE, REMOVE, or OPTOUT (standard keywords supported on many U.S. messaging programs). Reply HELP for help. Frequency varies; message and data rates may apply. If you believe you received an unwanted message in error, contact jack@ctweather.com. Access / correction / deletion: Email jack@ctweather.com. We may verify requests and retain records where the law requires. Connecticut and other states: If you are a Connecticut resident, you may have rights under the Connecticut Data Privacy Act (and similar laws may apply in other states), such as to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of certain personal data, or to opt out of certain processing where those laws require. We do not sell personal information or run cross-context behavioral advertising on this Site as those terms are commonly defined in U.S. state laws. If you live outside the United States, other privacy laws may apply; contact us with questions.
Children, where we operate, and links
The Site and Service are not directed to children under 13. We operate from Connecticut, United States, and the Service is aimed at U.S. users in our advertised coverage area. We process and store information in the United States (including with U.S.-based or U.S.-accessible vendors as described above). If you choose to use the Site from elsewhere, you understand it is governed by U.S. law and this policy. External links follow others’ policies.
Changes
We may update this policy, change the date above, and give additional notice when required for material changes affecting subscribers.
